Highlights
Not a fan of their Shrewsbury Biscuits, but a staunch admirer of Mava Cake. A great accompaniment for morning tea or even otherwise.
Kayani Bakery is one of those few places left in Pune which are symbolic to Persian influence on the city of Pune. Kayani Bakery has been helping Pune to kick-start its days with one of a kind baked products since 1955.
Shrewsbury Biscuits:
As you enter the Kayani Bakery, tempting aroma of freshly baked goodies welcomes you. And you can find a wide range of products lined up. Given the incredible popularity, Shrewsbury biscuits grab the attention. These saught-after cookies are made of wheat flour, eggs and lots of maska (butter). If you are wondering why the name Shrewsbury, it comes from a market town in UK called Shrewsbury as written in this Wikipedia article. It is basically an English dessert. In terms of taste I must say they don’t live up to the reputation. I found them very much ordinary with a too much flavour of egg in it.
Mava Cake:
But Mava cake is a true gem which should ideally make Kayani Bakery famous in Pune and beyond. Their excellence in baking is evident from the way knife slides seamlessly in the cake and comes out spotlessly clean. So is the texture. Every time you dig a knife into it, will come out with geometrically perfect shapes. Even in terms of taste cake is extremely yummy. Because of mava used inside, it has that richness of milk and can be a great accompaniment with morning tea.
Other favourites are breads, cheese papdi and pasatas to name a few. Like many other legendary food outlets in Pune, even this bakery is neither open all day nor seven days a week. It’s as rare as hen’s teeth that your free time and their availability matches. So whenever you get lucky, do drop by Kayani Bakery on Pune’s Eat Street, to get a taste of its old world charm and the timeless offerings…
